Darkroom Print: The Mennonites, 1994
Larry Towell first encountered the Mennonites in the fields close to his home in Ontario, Canada, and gained unique access to their lives, which were otherwise cut off from the rest of society. Towell documented life in Mennonite communities for over 10 years over the course of the 1990s, photographing a total of 23 Mennonite groups across Canada and Mexico. Pictured here is a family from the La Batea colony in Zacatecas, Mexico â an image that would later go on to be the cover of his book, The Mennonites, originally published in 2000.
